Ready. Set. WRITE! {week12}

RSW badgeWhat’s Ready. Set. WRITE!, you ask? It’s a summer-long writing intensive that encourages goal setting and accountability, and provides an opportunity for writers to cheer each other on at any point in the process—be it planning, drafting, revising, and/or polishing. The event is hosted by Alison MillerJaime MorrowErin Funk, and Katy Upperman.

I’ve be checking in weekly to share my progress, and today’s the very last day of the event! Where did summer go?

How I did on my goals (overall)

Revise VENGEANCE ROAD and submit a first draft to my editor by July 8th  — Check! I also received my first edit letter at the beginning of August and have already churned out another revision. It’s now on its way to trusted beta readers.

Revisit (read, revise, and polish) SHUTDOWN, a YA speculative fiction stand-alone I’ve had on the back burner, by the end of the summer — Check again! I was pleasantly surprised to find that I still loved this ms after a year away from it. It, too, is now in the hands of a beta!

Read three YA books a month — Half check? Some months I only got through two, others three. But either way it was a success. My TBR pile was out of control and I tackled more reading this summer than I did in the spring.

The biggest challenge I faced this summer

Baby prep! I’m expecting my first in October, so naturally most of the summer was spent reading pregnancy books, taking childbirth classes, decorating the nursery, and so on. All wonderful distractions, mind you, but they definitely cut into my usual routine.

A favorite line from my project OR a word/phrase that sums up what I wrote/revised

I’m sharing the opening line to VENGEANCE ROAD again. It came to me in the shower (I jumped out half-dripping to type it into my phone), and it’s survived all the editing and revisions so far:

It weren’t no secret Pa owned the best plot of land long Granite Creek, and I reckon that’s why they killed him.

Something I love about my WIP

As VENGEANCE ROAD undergoes professional revision, I can honestly say I grow more and more proud of it. It has made me work harder than any novel before (intense research, unique voice, diverse cast), and I cannot wait to share the finished product with you next fall!

And that’s all from me! I want to give a huge shout out to the RSW hosts: Alison MillerJaime MorrowErin Funk, and Katy Upperman. Ladies, thank you so much for organizing and moderating this summer program! You kept me productive and honest. And to everyone else: it was a blast tackling writing goals together. Let’s keep at it through fall and beyond. :)
